AUDIENCE AND GRAND JURY AWARD WINNER 2008 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

Eight years in the making, the feature-length documentary debut from Haddonfield, N.J. director Greg Kohs follows the lives of Mike and Claire Sardina, a loving couple from Milwaukee who hope one day to bring their duo of Lightning and Thunder to Las Vegas. The couple’s drive and spirit takes them from biker bars to the Wisconsin State Fair to a slot opening for Pearl Jam in 1995 (in one of the film’s most jovial moments, they convince a bemused Eddie Vedder to join them in a rendition of “Forever in Blue Jeans”). Good times, however, are rarely in the cards for long, and for the Sardinas, the end to theirs is abrupt and traumatic. While gardening in the front yard, Claire is struck by a wayward motorist and hobbled. The accident throws their lives into upheaval, leaving Lightning and Thunder unable to pay their bills and provide for their children, much less perform. These difficult years unravel in a series of intimate, unsettling home videos. Even at the family’s lowest points, Mike felt compelled to run his camcorder constantly, resulting in a deeply profound depiction of their struggles that, at times, can be difficult to watch. But the same drive that motivated Lightning and Thunder in their early years would not let them give in. Winner of the Slamdance Grand Jury Award, Song Sung Blue is a heartrending film about music, familial love, fidelity and the will to triumph over adversity -- the distinctly American tale of a couple pursuing their dream against all odds.
