WINNER BEST DIRECTOR - 2007 PALM BEACH FILM FESTIVAL (DUTCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES) |
Like Bend It Like Beckham, this film explores the tension between parental vicarious living and the offspring’s own dream. Suppose you are born as one of the eleven sons of a father, Rienus Dros, whose ambition in life is to have his very own soccer team… Johan, played by 24-year-old Dutch heartthrob Michiel Huisman, must tell his family that his ambitions and dreams lead him in a different direction. Though the boys make up a complete team, Johan defies them all by wanting to be a singer. This is a delightful comedy (with music) about romance, a budding musician, his family of soccer players and falling in love.
Nicole van Kilsdonk After finishing School for Journalism, Nicole van Kilsdonk went to the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam in 1991. After making a few documentaries, she specialized in writing and directing fiction films. She made several TV-series (The Labyrint), short films (SALE!, Zoe), 4 single plays for TV (50 minutes), and 5 Tele-movies. Her film Dawnswimmers was an award winning film musical, and Deining was awarded with the Golden Kalf (main Dutch movie prize). Johan was her first big feature film, awarded with Grand Prize at Worldfest in Houston. At this time, she’s writing a new feature called Going west and waiting for financing for a children’s feature How to survive Oneself, scripted by Tamara Bos.
