Lena Mahikan has never been good at being Indian. Being Indian has only brought her grief. Her dad offed himself when she was ten and her mom, a gambling addict, sucked at mothering and kicked Lena to the curb when she was 16 and pregnant. Since then Lena, 28, has been on her own in Toronto, raising her kid Peeka, (13), and scrubbing toilets to stay afloat. Lena’s a survivor. She’s done it alone and has no one else to thank but herself. But her worst nightmare comes true when Peeka ends up in the ER after a run in with an aerosol can.
Empire of Dirt is about a single mom, struggling to make ends meet yet unable to escape the cycle of poverty. As a last ditch attempt to save her kid from the streets she returns home after 13 years and is forced to reconcile a lifelong legacy of hatred towards her own mother in an effort to give her own kid the roots she deserves.
