     PEARL WAS HERE
U.S.A., 2012, 9 mins, Color

MIDWEST PREMIERE

Director/Screenwriter/Editor: Kate Marks

OFFICIAL SELECTION 2013 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

Pearl is the kind of seven-year-old who picks her scab and eats it. Wild and impulsive, she will not be tamed. Today, she has fallen in love with one of the stuffed toys inside the claw game at the corner store. So when her mom’s not looking, she squeezes through the hole and into the machine. Inside the claw, Pearl makes a nest of plush toys. This is her kind of heaven, soft and colorful, full of hundreds of friendly stuffed animals. Pearl’s mom soon discovers her whereabouts. She orders Pearl to come out, but Pearl refuses and a battle of wills ensues. A crowd gathers to gawk but instead bears witness to the power-play between Pearl and her mom. The seemingly funny spectacle reveals the traces of Pearl’s abusive home life and the violent side of a mother’s love.

Kate Marks
Kate Marks’ films are influenced by her background in theatre, clown, mythology, spectacles and Bronx kindergarteners. She is currently finishing her thesis film, MIRACLE MAKER as part of her MFA degree in film directing at CalArts. The film follows a washed up vacuum cleaner salesman, his 12 year-old assistant, and a defunct miracle maker as they collide in a pre-apocalyptic world of lost causes.
Kate is the recipient of the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant, The Beutner Family Award for Excellence in the Arts, and a Celtx Seeds Award. She is currently a Project:Involve fellow with Film Independent. Her films have screened at festivals all over the world.
Additionally, Kate has worked as a teacher, performer, clown, dancer, playwright and theatre director in New York City where The New York Times called her “a superb director” and “ingenious.”
When Kate was in the fourth grade she was advised to play the flute, but politely chose the trombone. She has been quietly rebelling against cuteness ever since. Kate is a graduate of Brown University where she received honors in playwriting.
