The skipper of the Scottish trawler (Gary Lewis) has worked for more than thirty-two years to buy his fishing vessel, but is bankrupt and about to lose his ship to the bank. While in the port of Ostend, Belgium, the skipper's son Sean accepts a large sum of money to smuggle Chinese illegal immigrants to Scotland in an attempt to help his father keep the trawler. With the help of a deckhand (Peter Mullan) looking for easy money, they hide the group in the belly of the boat. When one of the Chinese dies, disrepair is triggered leading the crew to tragic actions.
